100 years of theatre in Romanian language on the stage of the National Theatre

It's a time of celebration in Romania, and an even bigger celebration takes place in Cluj: today, the National Theatre marks 100 years of theatre produced in Romanian language!

We are witnessing a special moment, to be joyfully experienced together! The entire following week is dedicated to the anniversary of our theatre, until next Saturday's wonderful Gates Open Night!

Ever since Zaharia Bârsan's Poem of the Union was recited on 1st December 1919, the National Theatre has crossed a century of Romanian history filled with trials, ordeals, but also with many artistic and human accomplishments.

The anniversary week 100 years of theatre in Romanian language on the stage of the National Theatre brings a Festival for all of us, a celebration of dialogue, a recollection of the many memories connected to this wonderful monument from Cluj, and to the people whose art, work and talent made it all possible. I truly hope we will celebrate our shared love for theatre, which is this warm living art, always ready to change us for the better, to awaken our hearts and our consciousness, and help us face the contemporary reality with optimism, openness, courage, and commitment. I am most certain that you, the public of Cluj, will help us give this event its due sparkle.

Happy anniversary!

On 1 December 1919, the first words in Romanian were uttered on the stage of the National Theatre of Cluj-Napoca: "The storm has ceased!". It was the opening line from the play The Poem of the Union, written by Zaharia Bârsan, the first Romanian director of the theatre.

This year, the National Theatre of Cluj-Napoca celebrates 100 years of Romanian theatre!

The team of the National Theatre of Cluj-Napoca wants to celebrate this landmark with you, through a series of events and productions especially prepared for the centenary of our theatre. We are looking forward to welcoming you to enjoy together this anniversary year!
