Six Characters in Search of an Author is part of the "theatre-in-the-theatre" trilogy, alongside Each in His Own Way (1924) and Tonight We Improvise (1929). It is a testimony to the revolutionary character of Pirandello's theatre. Bringing up themes such as the multiplicity of identity, the impossibility of communication, and the tension between reality and fiction, the play dissolves theatrical conventions and exposes the limits of realism. When it was first performed at the Valle Theatre in Rome, in May 1921, Six Characters in Search of an Author caused confusion and scandal. Exactly one century later, we invite you to join our team in discovering how Pirandello's seminal work resonates with today's world. How does this search look like? What about Pirandello's musings on the function of the character and the relationship between life and art in the context of theatre's contemporary problems? Let the actors, the director, and their living doubles guide you, and take part in a live dissection of the intimate mechanisms of theatrical art.
