Staged as a country thriller, the production Death and Reincarnation as a Cowboy, perhaps Rodrigo García's most powerful and controversial text, sheds light on our daily infernos, fully exploiting the contortions of laughter. The one voice implied by the playwright has been fragmented by the director and adapted to contain a group of contemporary women, living examples of the Wonder Woman syndrome. The four actresses fiercely, but lucidly throw at us human degradation, visceral laughter and irretrievable love, their polyphony growing into a delirious confession, a post-absurdist puzzle. This floating island, the flickering reality into which Rodrigo García's extremely-contemporary text has been transposed on stage, is accompanied by popular country songs, remnants of a fading era.

The acting is deliberately theatrical: notice mechanized gestures, grotesque grimaces, or the obsessive "click clacking" of heels, this constant switch between rhythms; it is forever a plea for saving the colliding female universes. This type of playwriting invites analysis rather than flights of fancy. The immersion in García's chaotic world encourages critical engagement, a meta-play in cahoots with the text. "When disaster strikes, it strikes, and it strikes for all of us!"

Andrei Măjeri

Rodrigo García is a writer, set designer, visual artist and theatre director. Born in Buenos Aires and living in Madrid, he created his own theatre company, "La Carniceria Teatro" (Butcher Theatre), in 1989. Considered one of the most controversial contemporary Spanish creators, García writes explosive texts, rejecting old theatre models, and finding inspiration in Beckett, Pinter, Kantor. Rodrigo García brought together elements from the past and from modern culture, creating a new theatrical language. His plays - such as Prométhé, After Sun, L'Histoire de Roland le clown de chez McDonald's, J'ai acheté une pelle chez Ikea pour creuser ma tombe, Jardinaje humaine, Goya, Et balancez mes cendres sur Mickey, Agamemnon - are presented on the most important European stages, often under the directorship of the playwright himself. His stagings are experimental, in search of a personal language, trying to move as far away as possible from traditional theatre. For this reason, Rodrigo García's theatre is an uncomfortable one, exposing the dehumanization, depersonalization, the man transformed in a waste bin-carriage. The play Death and reincarnation as a cowboy is one of the emblematic texts of the Spanish author and director Rodrigo Garcia.

This is the second time the director Andrei Măjeri stages one of the Spanish playwright's texts, after Agamemnon, which opened in September 2015. Death and reincarnation as a cowboy is a confession-text, constructed from a succession of delirious monologues about human degradation and non-communication. The set represents an American bar with high chairs - which will later become hammock chairs -, with beer bottles and country music in the background. It's a production about transvestite women which, after a long day's work, drown their sorrows in a place like a floating island in the middle of a tumultuous life, where life stories are gathered as if in a chaotic puzzle, accompanied by the music of Dolly Parton, Lynn Anderson, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, interpreted live by the four actresses.
