The play is part of a trilogy, together with Waiting for Godot and End game. Beckett started to write Happy Days in 1960, in English, and it was published in New York in 1961. The author published the French version of the play in 1962.
Winnie, buried in sand waist down, takes various common objects out of her purse, in order to compensate for the emptiness which invades every hour of her "happy day". She wants to speak endlessly to overcome the silence that sorrounds her. She looks for her partner, Willie, a human wreck reduced to his basic needs, and talks to him. Despite everything however, there is in this play an unbreakable love for life.
