The artists’ work in the Cluj National Theatre was celebrated on 10 October during the 4th edition of the International Meetings in Cluj (8-12 October 2014), within the Awards of the Cluj Napoca Theatre ceremony. Awards were handed for best director, experiment and innovation, best stage technician, best actors and actresses in leading and supporting roles and the award for best performance offered by the public, thus recompensing the 2013/2014 activity of the Cluj Napoca National Theatre Company.
 

The awards were generously offered by personalities, associations and companies fond of theatre: Mrs. Viorica Samson Manea (the sister of the famous director Aureliu Manea), Professor Ileana Orlich (Romanian Honorary Consul in Arizona, U.S.A.), Rotary Club Cluj-Napoca Samvs, Aegon România, Jolly Company, Cluj Business Women Association and Conexio Association.

  

The "Aureliu Manea" Award for best director, offered by Mrs. Viorica Samson Manea, in memory of her brother, the director Aureliu Manea, was won by ALEXANDRU DABIJA, for directing the performance Sânziana and Pepelea by Vasile Alecsandri. Also nominated: Gábor Tompa, for directing the performance Aureliu Manea Trilogy by Aureliu Manea, and Silviu Purcărete, for A Hell of a Mess! by Eugène Ionesco.

 

The "Mona Marian" Award for experiment and inovation, offered by professor Ileana Orlich (Romanian Honorary Consul in Arizona, U.S.A.), was won by RĂZVAN MUREŞAN, for directing The Spectator sentenced to death by Matei Vişniec. Also nominated: Vava Ștefănescu, for the creation of the performance Swing, and Tudor Lucanu, for directing the performance Amalia takes a deep breath by Alina Nelega.

 

The "Eszter Bíró" for stage techinicians, offered by Company Jolly, represented by Mr. Francisc Koós, and by the Conexio Association, represented by Mrs. Maia Banciu, was won ex aequo by Jenel Moldovan - stage designer, Ioan Negrea - stage techinician and Giovanni Mateescu - stage props design.

  

Award for best actor in a leading role, offered by Rotary Club Cluj-Napoca Samvs, represented by Professor Alexandru Marcu, Phd., was won by CORNEL RĂILEANU, for his role as "The Character" in A hell of a mess! by Eugène Ionesco. Also nominated: Marian Râlea, for the part of Michel Houllié in God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza, and Sorin Leoveanu, for Lopakhin in The Cherry Orchard by A.P. Chekhov.

 The Award for best actor in a supporting role, offered by Aegon Romania, represented by Adela Marchiş, Marketing and Communications Manager, was won by RADU LĂRGEANU, for the role of Papură-Vodă in Sânziana and Pepelea by Vasile Alecsandri. Also nominated: Ionuț Caras, for  "The dragon" in Sânziana and Pepelea by Vasile Alecsandri, and Cătălin Herlo, for the parts of Ulysses, "The Director" and "The Son" in the performance Aureliu Manea  Trilogy by Aureliu Manea and Pishchik in The Cherry Orchard by A.P. Chekhov.

 

The award for best actress in a leading role, oferred by Company Jolly, represented by Mr. Francisc Koós, was won by ANCA HANU, for the part of Sânziana in Sânziana and Pepelea by Vasile Alecsandri and Amalia in Amalia takes a deep breath by Alina Nelega. Also nominated: Miriam Cuibus, for the role of "Aunt Hilda" in the performance Pandora’s box by Katalin Thuróczy, and Irina Wintze, for the role of Véronique Houllié in God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza.

 

The Award for best actress in a supporting role, oferred by the Cluj Business Women Association, represented by Mrs. Vice-president Edit Todoran, was won by ROMINA MEREI, for the role of "The old lady" in A Hell of a Mess! by Eugène Ionesco, and "The Bride" in the Aureliu Manea Trilogy by Aureliu Manea. Also nominated: Anca Hanu, for "The Bride" in the Aureliu Manea Trilogy by Aureliu Manea, and Patricia Brad, for "The Maiastra" in Sânziana and Pepelea bu Vasile Alecsandri, "The Waitress" in A Hell of a Mess! by Eugène Ionesco, and "The Court Clerk" in The Spectator sentenced to death by Matei Vişniec.

 

The Award of the Audience for best performance of the 2013/2014 theatre season, voted by the spectators of the Cluj Napoca National Theatre, was won by the performance SÂNZIANA AND PEPELEA by Vasile Alecsandri, directed by Alexandru Dabija.

The most important event of the fall at the Cluj-Napoca National Theatre is represented by the 4th edition of The International Meetings in Cluj - The ways of freedom (8-12 October 2014). The program of the event will be rich, comprising nine productions of the Cluj-Napoca National Theatre and a guest production, as well as debates and round tables which allow for these productions to be categorized according to genre (political theatre, dance theatre, theatre and circus, classical theatre) and for our theatre’s activity to be in touch with contemporary international cultural issues.

The event will present two premieres, The Extraterrestrial Clowns, script and directing Eli Simon and Mein Kampf by George Tabori, director Alexandru Dabija, together with the performances Swing, by Vava Ştefănescu; As you like it based on William Shakespeare, director Uray Peter; Amalia takes a deep breath by Alina Nelega, director Tudor Lucanu; The spectator sentenced to death by Matei Vişniec, director Răzvan Mureşan; How to explain the history of Communism to mental patients by Matei Vişniec, director Mona Marian; The Moebius Strip by Robert Cohen, director Răzvan Mureşan; The Cherry Orchard by A.P. Chekhov, director Roberto Bacci. Our guest performance is Don Quijote based on Cervantes, director Mihai Măniuţiu, a production of the "Liviu Rebreanu" Company from the Târgu-Mureş National Theatre.

 

The debates will focus on the following topics: Dance theatre and the Romanian public (debate moderated by Dan C. Mihăilescu, with the participation of Péter Uray and Vavei Ştefănescu); Literature and totalitarianism, epic and aesthetic. Debates, questions, polemics in the 3rd millennium (round table moderated by Ruxandra Cesereanu, with the participation of Ion Vianu, Angelo Mitchievici, Liviu Antonesei, Marius Oprea, Virgiliu Ţârău, Doru Radosav, Cosmin Budeanca, Ion Bogdan Lefter); Face vs. mask: in search of identity (debate with Robert Cohen and Eli Simon); The classical theatre on the contemporary stage (debate with Cătălin Ştefănescu, Roberto Bacci and Stefano Geraci).

The event will gather over 60 guests from Romania, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Poland, Portugal, France, Italy, USA, Hungary, Great Britain. 



The actress ANCA HANU from the Cluj Napoca National Theatre won the Award for Best Actress at the Short Theatre Festival from Oradea, for her portrayal of the main character from AMALIA TAKES A DEEP BREATH, by Alina Nelega, directed by Tudor Lucanu. The 20th edition of the festival took place from 21-28 September, 2014.

The productions from the competition had been selected by the theatre critic Ion Parhon. The members of the jury were Maria Zărnescu (theatre critic, teaching assistant UNATC), Elisabeta Pop (theatre critic), Mircea M. Ionescu (playwright), Adi Carauleanu (actor and artistic director of the "Vasile Alecsandri" National Theatre from Iași) and Alexa Visarion (director and script writer), the president of the jury.
